■ Variety description

The "Kikkoryu" is a succulent plant that grows naturally in the arid regions of South Africa, from the Eastern Cape to the Western Cape. It is also a popular plant that has long been cultivated by enthusiasts in Japan.

It forms tuberous roots underground, and the roots and vines grow and develop leaves. As it grows, the top of the tuberous root emerges from the soil and cracks, making it look like a turtle shell, hence the Japanese name.
To enhance its horticultural value, most of the tuberous roots are exposed above the soil, but in its native habitat, half to all of the plant is buried in the soil.

It is a winter-type plant, and is seen from late summer to autumn, or from spring to July.

During the growing season, water thoroughly when the soil is completely dry. Stop watering while the plant is shedding its leaves.

Keep it in a sunny, well-ventilated place. However, if the tuberous roots are exposed to direct sunlight for a long time, they will weather and the surface will be damaged, so make sure the leaves get plenty of sunlight while the tuberous roots are somewhat shaded.
Also, be careful not to expose it to cold winds in winter, as it will lose its leaves. During the summer dormancy period, keep it in as cool an environment as possible.
If you bury the tuberous root in the soil, it will grow quickly, just like in its native habitat.
